Unnie’s Kitchen: The Korean Food Craze

With most people locked in their homes due to the pandemic, a new online food shop opens its services for Filipinos drooling over delicious Korean dishes eaten by their favorite oppas and unnies. Grab your chopsticks and say mashisoyo!

Turning dramas into reality

Drawn by her love for Korean dramas, the owner of Unnie’s Kitchen cooked for the first time some stir-fried fish cakes (eommuk bokkeum) for her to enjoy while binge-watching her favorite drama during the enhanced community quarantine.

With her newfound culinary skills, she tried selling her home-cooked Korean dishes (banchan) to her neighbors. And it became a hit! Unnie’s Kitchen opened to the public, delivering every dish right to your doorsteps.

Korean Streetfood and Banchan

Most Korean dishes have a spicy flavor, either mild or flaming hot. Among the top favorites is the stir-fried fish cake, which is a staple side dish in every Korean meal. It is made from fish cake and flavored with hot chili sauce. Fun fact, Koreans usually call eommuk bokkeum as odeng which came from the Japanese word “odeng.”

Another best-seller is the yangnyeom chicken, a crispy Korean fried chicken smothered in sweet and spicy red bean paste called gochujang.

The famous Korean street food we often see in K-dramas is called tteokbokki. These are steamed and sliced rice cakes often cooked with fish cakes in gochujang.

If you're craving for something heavy, Unnie’s Kitchen also offers kimchi fried rice. In Korea, almost every food is best eaten with kimchi. It is a common side dish made from fermented cabbage and seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, ginger, and scallion.
