Make It Pinoy-style! 5 Filipino Food For Your Christmas Menu

‘Tis the season to be jolly! Christmas is the most joyful time of the year—people exchanging gifts, throwing festive parties, singing Christmas carols, and feasting with delicious food. It is the biggest holiday in the Philippines. Filipinos celebrate Christmas the longest as they begin decorating and planning for various festivities as soon as Ber months kick in.

Say “NO” to diet this Yuletide season. From delightful desserts to flavorful dishes, here’s a list of food to add to your Christmas menu for a Pinoy-style gastronomic holiday experience.

Lechon

Whole suckling pig or a pork belly roll, Lechon is the star dish in every Christmas gathering or Noche Buena in the Philippines as most Filipinos believe that a feast wouldn’t be complete without a roasted pig on the dinner table. Tender and juicy on the inside but crispy on the outside, it is a mouthwatering dish best eaten with classic Pinoy sauces like vinegar and Mang Tomas All-Around Sarsa.

Bibingka and Puto Bumbong

Bibingka and Puto Bumbong is a dynamic duo commonly sold outside churches to Filipinos who just attended the Simbang Gabi. Bibingka is a luscious rice cake made with coconut meat, slices of salted egg, cheese, margarine, and sugar, and baked in a special clay oven. Meanwhile, Puto Bumbong is a purple-colored glutinous rice delicacy steamed in a bamboo tube and served with shredded coconut meat, margarine, and sugar.

Leche Flan

Leche flan is a custard dessert made by steaming a concoction of egg yolks, condensed milk, fresh milk, and caramelized sugar. But Filipinos, nowadays, like to add graham float on the dish, putting their two favorite desserts in one. Just like lechon, Filipinos can’t do a feast without the sweet and luscious leche flan—a true Pinoy holiday dessert.

Christmas Ham

Sweet and savory, Christmas ham is a mouthwatering dish that graces every Noche Buena table. Yule celebrations aren't done right without the glorious, glazed ham, and it is not just served on the dinner table but also given as a holiday gift.

Fruit Salad

Fruit salad is a festive dish that brings color to the Christmas table. It is made with different kinds of diced fruits mixed together with cream and sweetened milk. There are some who likes to add coconut milk, cheese, and corn kernels into the dish. But however it’s done, fruit salad is part of the Filipino tradition.
